First major beer event of the year
The Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and Iron Springs Pub and Brewery will again host one of Marin’s favorite rights of spring, The Fairfax Brewfest, on Saturday March 13 from 1 to 5 PM at the Pavilion in Fairfax.
Now in its 15th year this event always seems to be blessed with sunny weather, and as the first major beer event of the season it typically sells out.
Brewfest Director Richard Pedemonte expects most of 2009’s favorites to return, including multi-year veterans 21st Amendment, Moylan’s, Lagunitas, and Broken Drum. Also confirmed are Iron Springs, New Belgium, and Firehouse. Pedemonte, who will produce the Brewfest for the fourth straight year comments “Even though we’re always packed with a dozen or so brewers I always look forward to seeing new breweries. Last year a new brewer, Napa Smith, won an award here. It was their first time out and they were quite pleased”
Naming their creations is something the brewers take seriously, well, not exactly seriously, but they put a lot of thought into creating names like Brew Free or Die IPA, San Quentin Breakout Stout, and Kiltlifter. Be sure to ask Lagunitas Brewing the story behind Undercover Shutdown Ale.
Brewmasters pour the beer themselves so patrons can critique, ask questions, and swap beer stories with the experts. The popular Taste ‘em and Rate ‘em competition continues this year, with patrons tasting and voting for their favorite beers. (Medals will be awarded)
The Brewfest theme is St. Patrick’s Day so be sure to wear a little green. With a little luck the weather will cooperate so folks can enjoy the outdoor patio and dining area. Musical entertainment will announce shortly, but you can count on something lively and with an Irish flavor.
